WEF endeavors to support and enrich the school system and its programs -- not replacing the Town's funding for the school district, but supplementing it through corporate and private donations. WEF supports the Wilmington Public School System in five broad areas: scholastic enrichment, arts in education, technology, multicultural awareness and staff professional development. WEF directly helps Wilmington students by providing private funds for innovative and creative programs that the school department budget cannot cover.
Since its establishment in 1994, the Foundation has raised over $100,000. The initial Charter Donor Campaign in 1994-1995 raised $60,000. During the period 2000-2003, fundraising campaigns were dedicated to technology support for the schools. For instance, in November 2000, the Foundation raised and donated $14,817 for three SMART Boards for three Wilmington elementary schools. WEF also raised nearly $76,000 to provide two wireless 24 Capacity Laptop Carts for the Wilmington High School. As technology has become integral to the school system and has been allocated specific funding within the school district's budget, WEF has expanded its support to the district to areas in addition to technology.
